Yesteryear Collection

In 1901, as people looked optimistically towards the promise of a new century, Charles Burrell & Sons Ltd. drew up plans and constructed a prototype for a double-crank compound "undertype" steam wagon. However, a decade would pass before the Norfolk company would build another, this time a 5-ton compound with an "overtype" layout. The following year, in 1912, Burrell introduced a single-chain driven vehicle with a "live" rear axle. Burrell was responding to the need for versatile steam-driven vehicles that could help power progress during an era of rapid growth and industrialization. Steam was an essential and exciting part of the new century-powering factories, ship-going vessels, locomotives, trucks and tractors. Indeed, the importance of steam was ever-present both in the city and on the farm. Whether toting bales of hay, construction materials or excited passengers, those steam-powered vehicles captured the enthusiasm and great optimism of the new century. Now, a classic 1912 Burrell Traction Engine has been re-created in a precision-engineered replica by Matchbox Collectibles exclusively for the Age of Steam II collection.
